Ice Breaker Games & Activities

An ice breaker should be the first activity planned for every party, it encourages the kids to mingle and get to know one another while accommodating the staggered arrival of guests.  Your ice breaker should create excitement and make the guests feel more comfortable at your party.  There are many different activities to choose from that make great ice breakers- some are more structured than others, many encourage group participation and some are suitable for all age groups- you can choose more than one if you want to.

 
 
Coloring pages- coloring pages are great for kids of all ages.  Choose pages that match your theme and provide crayons and other art supplies and allow the kids to get creative.  You can use the completed pages to decorate a wall if desired.

 
 
 
Driveway Graffiti- this is a great activity for the spring and summer months when the weather is nice.  Provide lots of chalk and let each child make their mark.

 
 
 
Edible necklaces- all you need is some string and an assortment of edible “beads”- honeycombs, cheerios, lifesavers, gummy rings are just some ideas.  No child will be able to resist!

 
 
 
Face painting- face painting makes a great ice breaker and really gets kids in the mood, depending on the size of your party you may want to enlist an older child or adult to help.

 
 
 
Playdough-you can make your own playdough or you can purchase what you need, provide each child with a lump of playdough and a cookie cutter.  Use a cover to protect your tabletop.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Pass the Parcel- you will need a small gift wrapped in as many layers as desired.  Kids should all sit in a circle and pass the parcel around as you play music, when the music stops the person holding the parcel unwraps one layer.  The child who removes the last layer gets to keep the prize.

 
 
 
15 Seconds- This game is fun and exciting for kids of all ages.  You will need a timer set for 15 seconds.  Have the kids all sit in a circle, choose one person to begin the game by asking a simple question that all of the guests take turns answering as quickly as they can before the time runs out.  Allow players to take turns.  Some example questions are;

What is your favorite food?

What is your favorite color?

What is your favorite animal?

What is your favorite chocolate bar?

 
 
 
Secret sticker- give each child a small sheet of stickers as they arrive and have them try to stick them to the other guests without getting caught, if they get caught they must take one sticker from that person.  The first person to get rid of all their stickers wins.

 
 
 
Signature hunt- this activity will encourage the guests to mingle and get to know one another.  You will need to make a bingo like sheet and write 25 different statements written in each box, for example, who rides a bike, favorite food is pizza, took a dance class etc. The first person to receive a signature for each box wins.

 
 
 
Matching game- this game can be played with kids of all ages and with variations.  Each child is given a half of something and must find the person who has the other half.

 
 
 
Punch line- write jokes on small pieces of paper and the punch lines and a separate piece.  Players with the joke must find the person with the punch line. When all have been matched read the jokes out loud.

 
 
 
Balloon head- give each child a balloon and see how long they can keep it in the air without using their hands.

 
 
 
Balloon pop- everybody is a winner in this game and you will need a small prize for each guest. Write the name of each guest on a small piece of paper, roll it up and put it in a balloon before blowing it up.  Players all sit in a circle; one at a time they are blindfolded and try to pop a balloon by stomping on it, the person’s name in the balloon receives a prize.

 
 
 
Two Truths, One Lie- how well do the players really know each other? Each player picks three things to say about themselves, two truths and one lie; the other players must guess the lie.

 
 
 
Name ball toss- this game is perfect for kids who don’t yet know one another.  The kids all sit in a circle, choose one person to start and give them a soft ball.  The player must call out the name of the person they are throwing the ball to.

 
 
 
Balloon Bop- each player needs a balloon to begin with and throw the balloons in the air all at once.  The objective is to keep all of the balloons afloat, it doesn’t matter who owns each one.  The game is played until the last balloon touches the floor.
